AUTOMOTIVE NASCAR unveils its first electric racecar
NASCAR debuted its first electric racer at the Chicago Street Race, a $1.5 million prototype developed with ABB, Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota. This initiative aims to promote sustainability through the NASCAR Impact program and test fan interest in electric racing alongside traditional gasoline-powered cars. |
Riley Nelson, NASCAR's head of sustainability, highlighted their goal to make electric vehicles appealing and accessible in racing. The prototype features three STARD UHP 6-Phase motors and a 78-kWh liquid-cooled battery, capable of producing 1,000 kW at peak power on a modified Next Gen chassis. |
Looking ahead, NASCAR plans to install EV charging stations and transition to 100% renewable energy at its race tracks by 2028. By 2035, the organization aims to achieve net-zero operating emissions, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability in motorsports. |

AI OpenAI's internal AI details stolen in 2023 breach
Early last year, a hacker breached OpenAI's internal messaging systems, stealing details about its technologies and raising security concerns, reports the New York Times. Although key AI systems were secure, sensitive information from an employee forum was exposed. In April 2023, OpenAI disclosed the breach internally, stating no customer data was stolen. |
Leopold Aschenbrenner, a technical program manager, criticized OpenAI's security measures and was later dismissed for leaking information, which he claimed was politically motivated. OpenAI denied this, stating his dismissal was unrelated to his security concerns. |
In response, OpenAI enhanced its security, adding safeguards to prevent AI misuse and forming a Safety and Security Committee led by former NSA head Paul Nakasone. Despite concerns, OpenAI believes its current AI technologies do not pose a significant national security threat. |

TECH Apple approves Epic Games' marketplace app
After multiple rejections, Apple has approved Epic Games' third-party app marketplace for launch in the EU. This comes after the EUβs Digital Markets Act (DMA) allowed Epic to bring its digital storefront and Fortnite back to iOS in Europe. Initially, Apple rejected the submission twice, citing similarities between the Games Store and Appleβs App Store. |
Epic Games took the matter to European regulators, arguing the rejections were "arbitrary and obstructive." The dispute centered on design elements like the "Install" button, which Apple claimed was too similar to its "Get" button. Epic maintained it used standard naming conventions common across other platforms. |
By Friday afternoon, Apple approved the marketplace app with the condition that Epic would make necessary adjustments in a future update. Apple also noted that Fortnite had already been approved for iOS. |
