Found: Records of Pompeii’s Survivors
Think of the story of Pompeii. History often recounts the fact that Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying Pompeii and Herculaneum in ash and rock, and both cities were wiped out. The story ends there, until the 1740s at least, when excavations began. Recent research, however, shifts the narrative—the story of Mount Vesuvius does not end at annihilation. New evidence now shows how citizens rebuilt their lives in the aftermath of the historic eruption.
