Major record labels, including UMG, Warner Music, and Sony Music, filed a lawsuit accusing Verizon of ignoring customer copyright violations for profit, reports Music Business Worldwide. |

The plaintiffs seek up to $150,000 per violation under the DMCA, potentially totaling $2.6 billion. The lawsuit lists 17,335 tracks from artists like Elvis Presley and Matchbox Twenty, and alleges Verizon ignored nearly 350,000 infringement notices since 2020 to keep high-paying customers. |

Charging Verizon with contributory and vicarious copyright infringement, the suit seeks maximum penalties and attorneyโs fees. Previous similar cases include Viacom vs. YouTube, where YouTube qualified for the DMCAโs โSafe Harborโ provision, and a $1 billion judgment against Cox Communications, which was overturned on appeal due to lack of profit from ignoring piracy. |

Streaming use hits all-time high in June 2024
|

Streaming has hit a new high in the U.S., accounting for 40.3% of daily TV viewing in June 2024, according to Nielsen. This marks the largest share for streaming since it surpassed cable in 2022. Cable TV held 27.2%, while broadcast TV was at 20.5%. |

YouTube led streaming platforms with 9.9% usage, followed by Netflix at 8.4%, boosted by Bridgerton, which generated 9.3 billion viewing minutes. Amazon Prime Video secured 3.1%, while Hulu and Disney+ followed at 3% and 2%, respectively. |

As streaming grows, revenue focus is shifting toward advertising, projected to account for 28% of global streaming revenue in 2024, up from 20% in 2023. This shift is due to stagnating subscription growth, leading services like Netflix and Disney+ to adopt hybrid models that offer lower subscription fees in exchange for ads. |

A recent investigation by Proof News revealed that major tech companies, including Apple, NVIDIA, and Anthropic, trained their AI models on a dataset of over 173,000 YouTube video transcripts without permission. This dataset, created by the nonprofit EleutherAI, contains transcripts from more than 48,000 channels, raising concerns about the ethical sourcing of data from creators. |

Notably, the dataset includes transcripts from popular creators like Marques Brownlee and MrBeast, as well as major news outlets such as The New York Times and BBC. Brownlee criticized Apple for using data scraped from YouTube, highlighting ongoing issues in the industry. |

AI companies continue to lack transparency regarding their training data. Recently, artists condemned Apple for not disclosing the sources for Apple Intelligence, its new generative AI launching this year. |

Elon Musk is moving X and SpaceX to Texas
|
|
Elon Musk says he plans to relocate X and SpaceXโs headquarters from California to Texas, citing Californiaโs SAFETY Act as a significant factor. In a tweet, he stated that this law, along with others affecting families and companies, led to the decision to move from Hawthorne to Starbase. |
|
The SAFETY Act, recently signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, prevents schools from forcing teachers to disclose a student's gender identity changes without permission and protects teachers from retaliation for not outing students. |
|
Musk also announced that X will move its headquarters to Austin. He previously revealed plans to build a community called Snailbrook near Austin and is considering opening a university there. This follows Musk's recent trend of relocating businesses to Texas, including Tesla in 2021 due to pandemic-related shutdowns. |
