Juneteeth, Its Significance, and Everything That Came After
On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger issued an order declaring that all enslaved people in Texas—who did not know they were free in the aftermath of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation—were free. This occasion is now known as Juneteenth.
Momentous as Juneteeth is, however, the struggle for freedom for Black Americans did not stop there.
