We strive to be different

06-25-2024

Dear Friend,

Teaching is my life.

It is one of the great benefits of serving as president of Hillsdale College that I am able to get to know my students in and outside the classroom.

In fact, one of my favorite things to do is have lunch with students in the Hillsdale dining hall and engage them in lively discussions. They never disappoint. I love their thoughtful and provocative questions, their ideas about the books they are reading and about the issues of the day, and the courteous yet assertive way they debate ideas with me and with each other.

I cherish the time I spend with Hillsdale students, and I take my responsibility to teach and encourage them to be good people and good citizens seriously.

It used to be that pursuing truth and defending liberty were understood as the goals of education by almost all American colleges and universities when they were founded. Sadly, they are no longer seen as goals of education on most campuses today.

In fact, most liberal colleges and universities today deny that such a thing as “truth” exists and instead encourage young people to find what is true for themselves, carrying their politically correct “safe spaces” wherever they go.

At Hillsdale College, we strive to be different. We work hard to provide young Americans with the kind of education that builds character and prepares them to become good and useful citizens. I believe that such education is necessary to preserve free government for ourselves and the next generation.

And we must defend this kind of education at all costs—fiercely maintaining our independence by refusing EVERY PENNY of taxpayer funding—even indirectly in the form of student grants or loans.

Watch this video to hear from Hillsdale students themselves, and learn more about the education Hillsdale provides on campus and nationwide.

Warm regards,

Larry P. Arnn
