Many people who start working with me in my Money Coaching program approach their finances from a place of scarcity.
Hey,
Many people who start working with me in my Money Coaching program approach their finances from a place of scarcity.
I can always tell.
It shows up like this:
They check bank accounts constantly
They look at prices and immediately jump to conclusions: “We can’t afford that!”
They repeat things they say their parents told them, like “Money doesn’t grow on trees”
…and many more behaviors that keep us thinking “small.”
Believe me, I get it. I grew up with immigrant parents who raised 4 kids on a single income. Our summer vacations consisted of getting in the family minivan and driving down to Southern California to visit relatives.
My upbringing was very modest.
We went to Disneyland once or twice, and I remember my dad pulling out a wallet full of coupons and state employee discounts just so we could afford it.
It wasn’t until I went to Stanford that I realized what money could do, and what abundance can mean. My parents told me early on they couldn’t pay for college. So I applied to as many scholarships as I could to pay my own way.
2 lessons I learned from paying through college
Instead of thinking stuff was out of reach financially, I learned to ask myself:
“Is there ANY way I can make it work?”
Anyone reading this right now can apply that same lesson.
For example, if you want to take a vacation to Hawaii, you could save $200 a month for a certain amount of time. Or you could use credit card points. Or find a place to cut costs. Or take on a freelance gig to pocket some extra money each month.
My Money Coaching students have done ALL of these things to achieve their Rich Life goals.

Another huge lesson from paying my way through Stanford: anabundance mindset is a winning mindset.
My Money Coaching students have experienced this abundance mindset firsthand.
"I find myself here today on a Monday, thinking about spending time with my family at a new restaurant at the end of the week. Now, instead of resistance, it’s exciting. We talk about where we want to go, what we want to eat, when we can cut out of work early and pick up our son, if we want to invite friends or not, and what movie we’ll watch after.…the last few times we went out, we got MULTIPLE appetizers, didn’t look at the price in our decision, and brought any leftovers home for even more fun!"

"After, the first monthly call with Ramit, my entire perspective changed. He encouraged us to be as proactive with our finances as we did with other aspects of our lives. I came out of hiding after that night!
I have since slashed my insurance payments in half, combined my accounts into one interest-bearing checking, found other ways to earn more, waived several fees that I would’ve just shrugged off in the past and increased my salary:). My biggest win though, has been changing my money psychology and the invisible scripts. I cut out what I didn’t need and ended up freeing some money for myself each month!
I am moving to better neighborhood next month and I know I’ll be able to afford it because my CSP says so 😉. The IWT community has been a blessing! Sometimes, as a noob, I second guess myself and end up with analysis paralysis. The community really helps me put things in perspective and played a huge part in helping me stay consistent. I share what I’ve learned with my family and it’s been great having productive conversations about money."
P.S. The next Money Coaching call is on July 25 at 8pm Eastern / 5pm Pacific. If you join now, you can attend! And this will be just one of many coaching calls you’ll get with me.
