Beat The Heat: Cool Your Body and Mind Naturally

07-05-2024

Here is what's coming up at CCA

This time of year can be difficult for some as the excess heat can aggravate the heat in their body. The qualities of summer are similar to those of the pitta dosha, hot, oily, and sharp. Here are some simple tips to alleviate the effects of summer.

  • Drink cool (not iced) water with lemons, limes, and mint.
  • Keep your skin cooler and calmer by massaging oil into your skin before stepping into the shower.
  • Think positive and encouraging thoughts
  • Avoid foods with hot spices, instead opt for foods that are naturally cooling like bitter vegetables, berries, and fennel.
  • Listen to soft and peaceful music.
  • Establish a daily meditation practice, prayer, or reflection time.

If you haven't started a daily meditation practice or want to try a new meditation try the So-Hum Meditation below!

So-Hum Meditation:

Many people know this mantra, it is the mantra of the breath. If we listen closely enough, we can hear these sounds:

"So" as we inhale. "Hum" as we exhale.

Some use this as their internal mantra for meditation. It's a beautiful mantra and meditation. It's also a mahavakya (or great statement of truth). Here is some more information: "So" refers to the Divine as a form of breath (Asu). "Hum" refers to the individual (Aham). Here we see that what appears as life (breath, prana) is the breath of God or the Divine. Put another way, it is the breath of God (Divinity in any form you relate to ) that gives us life. There is no separation. This life is a Divine gift.
