Mark Zuckerberg’s 4th of July video goes viral

While many Americans celebrated the 4th of July with barbecues and fireworks, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg took a different approach. In an Instagram post that went viral, he was seen surfing in a black suit and bow tie, holding an American flag in one hand and a drink in the other, with Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." playing in the background.

Viewers were unsure if the video was AI-generated, but Zuckerberg clarified in the comments, saying, "Pure 8-month recovery surfing with a dry start right here." This refers to his recovery from a torn ACL he sustained in November 2023 while training for an MMA fight.

The video garnered positive comments, with many praising Zuckerberg's celebration style. This isn't his first viral 4th of July post; in 2023, he went hydrofoiling while holding onto a flag.

Amazon is bricking its Astro business robots

Amazon is discontinuing its Astro for Business security robot, aimed at small- and medium-sized businesses, just seven months after its launch. The decision to focus on enhancing its Astro home robot, introduced in 2021 with advanced features, was communicated via email to customers and employees.

"We are fully committed to advancing consumer robotics solutions for the home," said an Amazon spokesperson. Astro for Business robots will cease operations on September 25, with Amazon encouraging customers to recycle them through its program.

The $2,350 robots offered three subscription plans, including "Astro Secure" for $60 per month, providing features like route programming. Effective immediately, subscription fees will cease, and affected customers will receive a $300 credit, along with refunds for any unused fees.

Samsung shares soar to over 3-year high on AI demand

Samsung Electronics' shares surged to their highest level since January 2021, driven by expectations of better-than-anticipated Q2 profits due to booming AI demand. The stock rose 2.24% on Friday morning, reaching 86,500 Korean won ($62.73), following a close at 84,600 won on Thursday.

Samsung projected Q2 operating profit to be about 10.4 trillion won ($7.54 billion), a staggering 1,452% increase from 670 billion won a year ago, beating LSEG's estimate of 8.51 trillion won. Revenue is expected to range between 73 trillion to 75 trillion won, aligning with analysts' forecasts.

The world's largest memory chip maker rebounded as memory chip prices recovered, driven by AI optimism. Samsung, which faced record losses in 2023, now sees strong AI-driven demand, particularly with its AI-enabled Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphone.

WhatsApp develops personalised AI avatar generator

WhatsApp is developing a new generative AI feature allowing users to create personalized avatars for various settings. Found in the WhatsApp Beta for Android 2.24.14.7 by WABetaInfo, this feature uses user-supplied images and Meta’s AI Llama model to generate avatars.

Users can place themselves in settings ranging from forests to outer space, similar to AI-generated images seen in apps like Lensa AI or Snapchat’s “Dreams” feature. To create their avatar, users must initially upload photos of themselves for Meta AI training. They can then generate avatars by typing "Imagine me" followed by a setting description in Meta AI chat or within WhatsApp conversations by typing "@Meta AI imagine me..."

This optional feature requires manual activation in WhatsApp settings and allows users to delete reference images at any time through Meta AI settings.
